Assignment 2 Report
Introduction
The main idea of this application is to provide a practice scenario for those who are scared or nervous about public speaking.
Description
When the user enters the application, he/she will appear in a lecture theatre and face some audience. The user can control the audience to keep quiet or make chatting noises, and then practice public speaking, which is a virtual scenario that may reduce the psychological pressure on the user.
The target users of this app are those who are afraid of public speaking. For example, students or project leaders who are preparing their first presentation can practice in this virtual scenario. Current treatments for all types of phobias are expensive and have a limited number of scenarios. This application is specific to the phobia of public speaking.
This application requires VR devices to be worn so that the user can walk around the virtual scene.
VR technology can enhance realism and achieve better therapeutic outcomes by creating collaborative and immersive environments. VR can also save money, time and resources by replacing real-life trips to places such as hospitals for phobia treatment. (Health Fitness Revolution, 2022)
Interaction Design
The interaction in this application is a small cube that works as a sound on/off button. For example, Rose, a college student who is preparing a presentation for a group assignment. This is her first presentation and she is very nervous about speaking in front of a crowd. So she can use this application. When she enters the virtual lecture theatre and walks up to the lectern, she can see a line of text that explains the function of the small cube. When she touches the small cube, the virtual audience in front of her makes a chatty sound. When she touches it again, the sound stops. This simulates the reaction the audience below might have during a formal speech. Some people are nervous about the audience quietly concentrating on their speech, while others feel that the audience is chatting to themselves because they are giving a bad speech.
Technical Development
This application uses Oculus interface technology and the key feature is the sound switch interaction. An AUDIO SOURCE is added to the small cube used as a button, as well as a script to control the sound switch. When the user touches the small cube, they can turn on the sound effect for listener chat, and touch it again to stop it. (Code from ChatGPT)
Descriptions of 3D Models
There are two 3d models used in this application. The first is a lecture theatre and the scene also includes a lectern and steps for the audience to sit on.
The second model is a character model, which is used to simulate multiple listeners.
